Here is the solution.

1. Open a new tab
2. In the URL bar type: chrome://flags/
3. CTRL-F and type: Enable using the Google local NTP
4. Set this feature to: 'Enabled'
5. Relaunch

That should restore your home page to the interface you're used to.
